A Modern Exploration of Gender Roles in Nigeria: Media Marvel A Nasty Boy

This week there was a very interesting post on the BBC World News page. In a short video on the "Watch and Listen" portion of the front page, the BBC news network, explores a modern publication titled A Nasty BoyA Nasty Boy is newly created public platform that is making steps towards "testing" Nigeria's more conservative ideas about gender roles and exceptions.

Within the post, the video shows examples of men and women defying strict gender roles in Nigeria. This is done via photographs and video of men wearing glitter and make up, as well as skirts and dresses, while women where pants and blazers.
Through a variety of recorded conversations, not only with A Nasty Boy's founder Richard Akyuson but with serval models working on
the project, the BBC is able to unpack not only the lingering problems about gender expectations, but the way Nigeria is combating these expectations by providing a safe space, and a platform, for conversations to be held about the importance of acceptance and self love.
This is an amazing step towards truly impacting future communities and empowering Nigeria's citizens to make advances towards progressive ideas about gender roles. Being able to have a platform, as well openly discuss social issues in a community where there is seemingly little tolerance for questioning gender expectations, is extremely important in order to create a national conversation about the way in which many "non western" communties are struggling with LGBTQ problems.
