Women Fighting for Peace in The Central African Republic

In an article on the Guardian.com, Rebecca Ratcliffe,  a freelance writer, crafted a telling piece about the experiences of all female militias in Central African Republic.

Women have  been placed into a comprising position as a result of the battle between Muslims and Christians who divided a region into two battle fronts. Rebels from chad and Sudan began taking over towns. They overthrew the president, and as the years progressed over 1.1million people were displaced as a result of vicious battles.

In 2014 instability was rife. Many homes were burned, people were decapitated and left without access to food or medicine. The town of Boda, in the Central African Republic became the center for extreme conflict.

People then began to flee to save their own lives. Despite many attempts to help aid in relgious conflict by providing community projects  safe spaces, and religiously united football games, the conflict has not been completely solved. There is still tension in the region between both groups.

According to Eiwa Djabou, a muslim woman who helped unite both christens and muslims in a movement for peace stated, "Women are not fighters, women just want peace, women are the ones who face the crisis.”

However, as the conflict grew in size and number, "Bida women refused to obey the town's battle lines."

Many women who have lost their children, and husbands and have joined more than 200 other women to fight for peace. Djabou called upon women to help end the fighting. They were subsequently given women and they roam freely between the battle lines to help preserve piece int heir city.

She later stated, "We mae peace come back to Boda, there has been a very significant change."

With the help of the women in the region on both sides of the religious conflict, the armed small military in Boda has helped surpasses some of the fighting int he region. They also hope to become an example for other communities in the region who have suffered as a result of the local battles.

Ultimately, these women are helping to create a foundation for gender regions and equality by being amazing examples of  the strength and determination that both women and men exemplify.
