Zimbabwe's Political Crisis

Zimbabwe is currently undergoing a modern transition of political and social power. According to an article on the BBC.com website, Zimbabwe's president, Mr. Mugabe, has been confined to his house. Despite having led the country for 37 years, many Zimbabwean's have demonstrated their frustrations in the form of massive protests against their current leader.

After Mugabe released his deputy from political power, and signaled that he "favored his wife grace as his successor," the military and the people of Zimbabwe have rallied support in the streets against him. As broadcasted on CNN over the
past few days, tanks, weaponized soldiers, and explosions have swept through Zimbabwe.

Anny Soy, a BBC journalist, spoke to protestors in Harare. People can be seen in the video in the BBC article celebrating and cheering at the words of three women calling for Mugabe's resignation.  One of the women in the video said, "We don't wish him bad, he has done what he has done. He has wronged us and he knows that. But now he must go and rest...with his maker."

According to the article, the protests have entailed, ripping up pictures of the current president as well as marching to his office and his residence. Photographs taken depict the massive amounts of people outside of both his office and residence, waiting and held in limbo by the military.

As explained by the BBC, Mugabe's support base has continued to crumble as his presidency has worn on. Many who fought along side him against colonial rule have also called for him to step down as the country's leader. However, the attempts to remove him from office are primarily being done behind the scenes because he does not want to legitimize a coup, which he believes the military is currently staging.

Despite Mugabe's beliefs, the military, has claimed that they are simply attempting to help quell the political crisis in the country.

The military has said they have attempted to do so, primarily due to international pressures. The country's dilemma has been broadcasted on a variety of international news sources and outlets.
America, China, the United Kingdom, Botswana, South Africa among other countries and people in power have spoke out against the current president or the civil unrest in the country. Many counties and political figures have called to a quick conclusion in order to bring the country the peace it deserves.

With the world watching, and country in political crisis, all eyes are on Mugabe. The question still remains, what will happen in Zimbabwe? I hope for political and social change and change to better suit the needs of the people in the country who are seek political peace for years to come.
